Debben bunny chows and bunny bargains

Cyanide and Happiness, a daily webcomic
Cyanide & Happiness @ Explosm.net

So.  After six months of living here, I was finally forced to experience the local indian delicacies known as “curried samoosas”.  I was force fed them by our finance department.  How apt that all the hindians stick to the money division.

“Just bite one, in all” the group of giggling charros said.  So I did.  Motherfucker, the chillis they use are potent! With tears of pain in my eyes and laughter in hers, Prebashni has promised to make me potato samoosas with cheese in.  She didn’t even laugh at me when I asked her why the potato was luminous yellow.  Krishnee and Pravesh have sworn that their mother’s aunty’s cousin twice removed makes the best “breyani” in town.  Govender and Naicker have told me that for only “dirty rands in all” I can have one times best halaal bunny chow.  And a golden watch, “genuine Seiko”, too.

Oh how I love this place and all its people.  Durban town has been a part of me for so long, I just wish I’d known it sooner.  The aunties at work have me hysterical, who knew indian girls mouths were so FILTHY?

What are your favourite things about your hometown?

  • My hometown is Debbin too, and I have never had more potent curry than when I was there. But what I miss most about Debbin is the monkeys, they were so cute and, well, a pain in the ass too. I miss the huge thunderstorms too.

  • Po, I experienced my first big Durban thunderstorm here the other night. Shat in my pants, I did. But loved it!

I think I live too much in the city part of Durbs to know about the monkeys, but we used to have them back home on the South Coast and they irritated the befuckery out of me!

  • Hehe, there’s nothing better than a Durbs curry!

  • Jenty, I’m still not brave enough to try the curry. All my life my mom has made an extra pot of stew for me when the family had curry for dinner, hot things just don’t do it for me.

  • OMG Shee .. this Cyanide & Happiness is absolutely brilliant!

I can’t eat hot foods either. I decided long ago that the “teary eyed, runny nose” look doesn’t suit me at all!

  • Please, Durban wishes they had thunderstorms, the Highveld has one of the highest incidences of lighting strikes in the world. I love Joburg thunderstorms that rattle windows. My friend’s lost 4 ADSL modems, 2 decoders, one computer and a media centre.
And don’t even get me started on the superior quality of our crime…………..

  • 2am Bunny Chows, a proper Roti from Sunrise in Overport and K.Haribhai & Sons Spice shop – a cruise past Bloo Lagoon … these are a few of my favorite home town things

  • my day isn’t complete without c&h. My second fave cartoon :)

  • i love hot food… i could totally live in debbin :)

    favourite things about my hometown?

millions of jakaranda trees (blooming at the moment, real pretty)
    my family and friends :)

  • WORS – okay dude, you win. Yussie. When i went to highveld tho it was so flat and dry and boring and dusty. Just saying. But ja, your storms sound cool. Ω COOKED – ooh, ooh! Hey, is cool runnings here still open? I like your list dude, must check some of those out! STEF – ah, but do your jacaranda’s bloom pretty purple flowers all over the road like our trees?

  • I’m seriously jealous of your curries, and how green everything is. If I don’t go body-surfing in the next 6 months I think I might die. Also getting a good sweat on here is almost impossible, you need a good 30 degrees with 80% humidity, like a free sauna, sounds like I’m knocking it, but I miss it.

All those appliances were lost WITH lighting protection!

  • Yes, Milne Street – go there and tell the owner Kevin that MELVILLE is the flagship and see what happens – very entertaining

  • WORS – don’t you okes have those fake wave house things? Go body surf there. If you wear a jean pant and send me photo’s i’ll send you free accom in durbs :) COOKED – haha i will do. Watch this space. You still living here?

  • nah – I live in the glorious suburb known as The Vale and work in The Ville (Gauteng)

  • I miss home… no where else can you find a good bunny chow and a place open at 2 – 3pm in the morning serving it up hot…jhb places of food and sustenance close by 1pm :( on a wkend too… how sad!!!

Thunderstorms are mad in DBN… but Worsbeursie is right. The electrical storms on the Highveld are something else…yet the sound in DBN is explosive…

    I want to come home!!!!

  • Thunder and lightening very fucking frightening in my part of the world, but we have canyons, mountains, monkeys, the big 5 and so much more. Those okes in Jo’burg want to see a real storm, come to the granite hills where the lightning takes out your unplugged stuff. You see the lightning dancing on the walls. The dog rips down the curtains trying to run away.

My 4 pet purple crested Loeries that live in my back garden, the honey birds, collared sunbirds and the dwarf mongeese? that rip open my garbage to get at the delicacies we so thoughtlessly close up in them.

Have you ever been run over by a swarm of mongi? ah fuckit one mongoose and about 15 of his mates? It happened to me. I walked into the courtyard and they ran right over me.

  • a quarter beans, snorkelling at vetchies, Steve and Toni’s bookshop, driving up marriott road when the indian mynahs are flying down it to roost

  • wow. I need to visit you GUY! would have paid cash to see your run over. DEX dude, gimme details, i’m knew to durbs. Where’s the book shop? Whats a vetchie? Quarter beans?

  • quarter beans = quarter loaf bread with beans, commonly broad beans… one killer bean bunni chow

vetchies = the best place to snorkel and its all safe :)

  • JA ok cool, but where is it?

  • oops sorry
its pass uShaka towards the harbour enterance
its the man made reef separating the beach and the harbour.
best way to get there is from the beach near uShaka

  • hey, out of interest, what do people mean by hometown? I mean the place where I grew up, other people mean the place where they live now, its all a bit confusing. Is there a definition? Just wondering.

  • your hometown is usually the place you grew up.

steve and toni’s is amazing. it’s on Mark lane off west street.

seriously everyone, drive up marriott road at about 4:45 in the afternoon. lods of indian mynahs swoop down the road just over yoru car to roost in the trees on the corner of cowey and marriott roads. freaking awesome.

  • Ok Sheen, I am officially hooked on your blog. You go girl and keep them coming

  • Vetchies Pier is one of the best places to surf/snorkel. Spent much of my childhood there with my dad.

I miss going to The Workshop – the Oriental Plaza there has the best curries.

And I miss buying joints (shit ones) from outside Bean Bag Bohemia.

I miss buy-one-get-one free at Wonderbar. I miss cheap shooters at Burn.

I miss Spar breadrolls and Checkers Aunty’s Bakery pies.

I miss Wendy’s Deli’s samoosas (she’s across the road from Glenwood Boys’ High)

I miss buying a huge container of breyani for 5 ront at varsity.

I miss the view from the Howard College balcony.

    I miss my friends.

    I miss my dogs.

  • yussie oke, you homesick by any chance, exmi? Pats tell us what you miss from harding? *SNIGGER*

  • Dirtbin, has the coolest lifestyle! Ring sting curries (best joint is Silverani’s in Silverton Rd.), Great Surf, Mountains, Beaches, Snow {sometimes} – yeah, i dig this place. I have lived in Jozi and CT, for me I fit here. I dig the monkeys, put fake fruit in a bowel and watch those mofos freak out…

  • [...] I live in Nelspruit Mpumalanga. Author: GuyMcLaren  |  Category: Bloggers I was reading Shebees blog about Durban and Curry and stuff and she asked what I liked about my hometown. I was also [...]
