In 9 minutes time it will officially be my 31st birthday. In previous years I would have been up partying and shouting it from the roof tops, and I’m sure in years to come I might still do that again. But for this year, for this one night, I sit with my son on my lap after the midnight feed, and I look at him with such awe and love. This year he’s small enough to curl into my neck with his whole body and breathe tiny little breaths of warm. This year, he is totally, entirely dependent on me and his daddy for absolutely everything, a huge responsibility, but an even bigger honour. This year, I sit quietly in his nursery where, just seconds before I took this photo, he was practicing his half-grin-half-gummy-grimace smile on me and melting my heart. He’s my very best birthday present.
